Julia’s Difficult Journey

From the very first day of her life, Julia began what was to be a very difficult journey. Due to congenital imperfections of her heart, this winsome six-year old has been on a long road ever since. Even the common cold seemed severe in her little body. In 2006, Love Without Boundaries was able to provide Julia with surgery to help her heart function better. Following this surgery, her caretakers felt she really began to make progress and gain much needed strength. She was a little fighter and surprised everyone as she quickly learned to walk on her own, talked more and more, and became more plump and healthy.

Scotty Stole My Heart!

In 2004, when I first had the opportunity to work in a Chinese orphanage, there was one little girl who captured my heart. I was amazed by the fact that I could be caring for 200 babies and yet have one that stood out as so special and dear to my heart. Leaving her after eight days of serving in her orphanage was one of the most difficult things I’ve done. And so when the time for my next trip to serve in another orphanage came, I told myself I would not fall in love with one child in particular. Much as I tried, another little girl stole my heart. Now when I work in the orphanages, I know that it’s inevitable – there will always be one or two children that I will form a special bond with – one or two children whose faces are forever etched on my mind and heart and whom daily remain in my prayers. On my most recent trip to China in May 2010, Scott was one of two of the over 500 children I encountered that captured my heart.

Matthew is a 10-year-old boy at our Jinjiang Believe In Me School. He knows everything fashionable, such as the latest cartoon image and newest songs. His special need is listed as mental delay, but this boy is lively and clever.

LWB’s Child of the Week: Gracie

LWB’s Education Program is proud to feature Gracie from our Huainan Believe in Me School as our featured child this week. Gracie is a beautiful six year old girl who has a repaired cleft lip. Gracie entered the program in preschool in September 2007 and she has really made incredible progress. When she first started, she was only three and could do very little, unable to even express her basic needs to let her caregivers know she was hungry or if she needed to go to the bathroom. Gracie was unable to answer simple questions, participate in group activities or play well with the other children.

Well, what an amazing difference LWB’s Education Program has made in the life of this precious little girl! Gracie has TRULY blossomed in an incredible way.

Ping Pong!

Ping, pong. Ping, pong. That is the sound coming from the Believe in Me Huainan educational program in Anhui province. Along with ooooos and ahhhhs, lots of giggles and laughs and “its my turn next!” A new table tennis table has been purchased! What FUN! This lovely table can be used indoors or outside for year- round action. Plus, it folds up for convenient storage. The older children are enthusiastically trying their hand at this much loved, much played game in China. Little do they know that while they are having fun they are improving their hand-eye coordination, their gross motor skills, their reflexes and their cardiovascular system. They are learning to keep score, take turns (although I think they get a lot of practice at that), and enjoy China’s national sport. GO HUAINAN! Who knows, maybe China’s next champion will be a BIM Huainan, Anhui graduate!

Jo from Jingzhou

Even older girls love a field trip to the zoo! This photo of 15-year old Jo was taken during the Believe in Me — Jingzhou field trip to the zoo in March. Despite her epilepsy and severe seizures that sometimes disrupt her life, Jo is a very good student who works extremely hard. About a year ago, she had a medical setback and as a result has had to work extra hard to catch up academically. Her character writing is truly lovely. We really admire her perseverance and work ethic!

Jo is one of the children featured in our first annual “Sponsor a Child, Change a Life” program in honor of International Children’s Day. Just $20 a month would cover her school fees for Believe In Me so she can continue in this excellent education program. A Day in the Life: Getting To Know LWB’s Education Volunteers

Joy.  Glee.  Fun!  It seems like every time we see photos like this one from our Believe In Me school in Jinjiang, someone is laughing, playing and having a ball.  What a pleasure it must be for the Education volunteers to be a part of this!  We’d like you to meet two of these Education volunteers as part of our continuing series, “A Day in the Life”.  While these two volunteers work with very different types of educational programs, they both have the opportunity to help individuals learn and reach for potential they never even knew they had.

Marilee Gilmore, Believe In Me –Jinjiang Coordinator: I found LWB on the Internet when searching for a foster child to sponsor in 2005. I had been so blessed by the adoption of my daughter from South Korea in 1984 and wanted to give back a little to another international child. I had researched different foundations and was amazed that this all-volunteer organization could do so much with the money contributed. A year later I joined the Education Team as a volunteer and have been with them ever since. I have been fortunate to be the Coordinator of Believe In Me-Jinjiang since we established the school in 2007.

Calling All Educators!

Are you an educator or a special educator, or someone who has connections to a school?  Are you a professional who works with children who have special needs?   If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you may be able to help us with an important project for our LWB Education program!

Most of the students in our Believe In Me Schools have mild to moderate special needs.  As the population attending our schools grows and changes, we continue to provide our teachers with the essential ongoing support and training that they need.  As part of this training, we are hoping to put together videos of various special education lessons or activities, as well as some general education activities in the areas of art and music, to provide to the teachers at our Believe In Me Schools.

Sarah: Once Shy, Now Sunny. Still Waiting…

When Sara first became a student at our Shantou Believe in Me School in 2007, the teachers described her as shy and quiet. She never smiled for pictures, and the teachers were very excited when they finally “caught” her participating in dance class. A few months later she smiled for a photograph displaying her artwork.
